I DM'd 200 People at Midnight. Never Again.
Instagram comment-to-DM automation, the free setup I built after hand-DMing 200 people, so your freebie sends itself while you sleep.
Let me set the scene. Early on, I posted a Reel of Nora doing something objectively adorable and wrote: “comment PLAN and I’ll DM you my free content calendar.” It worked far too well. Around two hundred people commented PLAN. And then I spent an entire evening copy-pasting the same link into two hundred separate DMs while my dinner went cold and both dachshunds judged me from the couch.
That is the exact problem Instagram comment-to-DM automation solves. Set it up once, and when someone comments your keyword, they get your link in their DMs automatically, whether it’s 2pm or 2am. Here’s the whole thing, the honest version, using the free tool I actually run.
What comment-to-DM automation actually is
It’s simple: you pick a keyword (say PLAN, GUIDE, or LINK). When someone comments that word on your post or Reel, a tool watches for it and sends them a direct message with whatever you promised. No spreadsheet, no midnight copy-paste, no missing the person who commented three days later.
Why it matters more than it sounds: this is the bridge from an audience you rent on Instagram to a list you own. A viral Reel is lovely, but it evaporates. A Reel that quietly routes commenters onto your email list is an asset. If you want the bigger picture of why that move matters, it’s the whole spine of how to become a pet influencer, and it’s exactly the kind of system that gets you paid without a huge following, which I broke down in how pet influencers actually get paid.
The tool I use: Manychat (the free plan is enough)
I use Manychat for this. Its free plan covers Instagram comment-to-DM automations, which is all you need to start, so you do not have to pay anything to try this today. There are other tools that do it, but this is the one I know inside out, so it’s the one I can actually teach.
The exact setup, step by step
Give yourself fifteen quiet minutes. You’ll need an Instagram professional (Creator or Business) account.
Connect Instagram to Manychat. Create a free account, choose Instagram, and authorise it. It walks you through the permissions.
Start a new automation and choose the trigger “user comments on my post or Reel.” You can point it at one specific Reel or at any post going forward.
Set your keyword. Pick one clean word people can’t fat-finger, like PLAN or GUIDE. Not a phrase, one word.
Write the opening DM as a button, not a naked link. Instagram’s rules want the person to tap first, so the first message is a friendly line plus a button (”Yes, send me the calendar”). When they tap, the next message delivers the actual link. This keeps you compliant and, weirdly, converts better because it’s a tiny yes before the click.
Add a public auto-reply to the comment. Something like “just sent it, check your DMs! 🐾” This does two jobs: it tells people the thing worked, and it quietly boosts your comment count, which the algorithm likes.
Turn it on and test it with a friend (or a second account) before you promote the Reel. Always test. Always.
My honest mistake: I automated the personality out of it
The first time, I got greedy and set the trigger to fire on any comment, not a keyword. So someone would write “she’s so cute!!” and instantly get a salesy DM with a link they never asked for. It felt like a vending machine wearing my name. A few people told me so, kindly, and they were right.
The fix was small: trigger on a specific keyword only, and write the DM so it sounds like a note from me, not a funnel. The automation should deliver the thing. It should never replace the part where you’re an actual person.
The contrarian bit: don’t automate everything
Two honest cautions. First, you do not need this at 300 followers. Set it up when a post is genuinely pulling comments, not before, or you’ll spend your energy on plumbing instead of content. Second, keep replying to the real comments yourself. The link can be automated; the relationship can’t. The creators whose automations feel gross are the ones who automated the warmth too.
What I’d do differently, starting today
I’d set this up on day one for my single best evergreen Reel, the one that keeps getting found, instead of scrambling to build it the night a post blew up. An automation on your most-watched Reel earns quietly for months. I go deeper on building content that keeps working in my faceless content workflow.
The tool, if you want it
That’s the whole system. If you want to try it, here’s my Manychat link again. And whatever you deliver by DM, if it’s ever a paid or gifted thing, keep your #ad labelling honest, same rule I follow here.
🎯 Your challenge this week
One Reel, one keyword, one link. Set up a single comment-to-DM automation on your best-performing Reel and let it run. Then tell me in the comments: what’s the one tedious thing you still do by hand for your account that a robot could probably take over? I’ll go first, it was those 200 midnight DMs. Tag @nicolenoraminidoxies if you post the Reel.
